Motor City Comic-Con 2010 - Day 3!

And so another Motor City Comic-Con comes to a close. I had such a blast this year that I'm bummed it went by so fast. I wish I could do shows like that every day. I'd like to thank all the awesome people who came by the table and hung out this weekend. I'd like to thank all the creators I met who were so unbelievably nice to me. Hearing Sergio Aragones compliment your comic book is a hard thing to accept as reality.

So I'll get back to the grind and work more on the GSD #2 this week. I expect it to be in stores on June 30th. And remember, Issue #1 comes out in the Chicagoland areas as well as some other random stores on May 26th. If your local shop would like to carry it, please contact me and I'd be glad to send them copies.

Well, only 5 more days 'til the next convention! See you at Summit City Comic-Con next weekend!

I leave you with some more awesome pictures. Woo!

Another good morning breakfast? Ehh, not so much this time.

I added this Yoda to a dude's amazingly awesome Yoda sketchbook. If you ever wanna feel pressure before you go to draw in someone's sketchbook, flip through the first few pages and see a Jeff Smith sketch in there. True story.

This is for a very special lil' lady named Faith who is bravely battling leukemia. She is a real deal superhero!

Neil Gaiman's Death, or as I like to call her, Lady Robert Smith From The Cure.

A lady had me do this Darth Maul for her grandson and then totally forgot to come pick it up later in the day. Kind of a bummer. Oh well, I'll paint it and put it up for sale next weekend!

Sergio has a glorious mustache already but even he couldn't resist trying on one of the free cookiedusters.

Max Brooks wants to remind you to not panic, and to grow a 'stache on your forehead. (Thanks to Braden for this one!)

I do not encourage the use of mustaches to vandalize things at conventions. Okay, well, maybe a little.

Dudepool.

Braden was our mustache man on the streets.

I should have some more pictures popping up randomly throughout the week. If you have any cool ones, send em my way!

Motor City Comic-Con 2010 - Day 2!

Another rip-roaring day at Motor City Con 2010. Today was even more awesome than yesterday. Tons of traffic in the Artists Alley. I love it. The 'staches were a huge hit, even drawing the attention of Maryann from Gilligan's Island! Oh yeah! So tomorrow is sadly the last day so I'm hoping to meet even more awesome people. So if you haven't already, come by and give me a high five or hug and get a sketch or something. And if you have already, just come back again! So here's the bunch of pictures I promised. Enjoy.

Good morning to me.

Squirrel!

Scott Pilgrim sketch card I did for fun. Come by and buy it or else Sean is gonna steal it from me!

Ryan as the Vegan Lantern.

Our team of mustachioed friends:

Our mascot of Day 2, complete with a monacle!

Sand 'stache!

I want your 'staaaache, I need your 'staaaache.

Somehow Freddy's 'stache didn't get burned off in the boiler room!

Batstache!

I ended the evening with some hot dogs and chili-cheese fries. Mmmmm.

Well, time to go party with my fellow geeks and have a few soda pops!

Motor City Comic-Con 2010 - Day 1!

Day 1 of Motor City Comic-Con 2010 was a blur! I'm sitting here in the lobby of the Courtyard Marriot, exhausted and full of Tubby's taco burger sub. Ohhhh yeahhhh. Today was a lot of fun despite it being pretty slow. Thank you to all who stopped by the table and bought prints and comics and whatnot. You all made my day. I didn't take a whole ton of photos because I was kinda out of it today. I'll try to take more pictures during the day tomorrow. So just a recap of what I have available at the table.

- The Great Sandwich Detective #1 ($4)
- How Stuff Happens #1 ($1)
- Ghosts! prints ($5) (I have only a couple of these left!)
- Old watercolor prints ($2) (Rorschach, Ghost Rider and Spidey)
- Sketch cards ($1 - Pencil and/or ink) ($2 - Painted)
- Robocop prints (Motor City Comic-Con exclusive) ($5) (Run of 20)
- Sketches ($1 - B&W) ($3 - Painted)
- Full 11x14 Commissions - TBD

I'm also running a contest where if you purchase anything from the table you get your name entered into a drawing to win the original watercolor Robocop painting. I'll be pulling the winning name about an hour or so before the show ends on Sunday. If you are coming to the show tomorrow but not staying for the whole thing, no worries. Just give me your e-mail address and I will make sure you get it if you win!

I also have some original art in my two portfolio books that I'm willing to sell, including a one of a kind Boba Fett watercolor painting. Perfect for Jeremy Bulloch to charge you $20+ to sign!

I'm gonna go get some much-needed sleep. I leave you with some pictures:

Mountains!

Sean modeling one of the free mustache stickers and looking very dastardly.

I'm doing a set of 3 sketch cards to be sold to raise money for Pediatric Oncology at the Chicagoland Entertainment Collectors Expo this fall. I'll post some more info soon.

The finished cards! Help a good cause!

Goodies

So I'm very very busy preparing for the next couple weeks. I'm working on exclusive prints, new print sets, posters, etc. as well as working on the next issue of The Great Sandwich Detective. I thought I'd toss a couple pictures up and let you know about the progress I'm making.

This is a quick snapshot of the exclusive print I made for Motor City Comic-Con 2010. This is watercolor and ink and approximately 5 1/2 x 8 1/2. It will be printed on 65 lb. beige cardstock, the same type I used for the Ghosts! prints. I will only be printing 20 of these (they will be individually numbered) and they will be $5. If you are going to Motor City Comic-Con and would like to pre-order one, just shoot me an e-mail. I will only pre-order up to 5 and the other 15 will be first come, first serve.

This is the finished version of the zombie painting I posted up a while back. I did this for my friend Matt Murphy's Hall of Zombies in his new apartment. I'm gonna have him snap a picture of it once it's framed and hanging up!

Right now I'm sketching out the three designs for the new print triptych. As I mentioned before, they're going to be monster-themed. I know so far I'm going to be doing one of a yeti that I've been doodling a lot lately and also finally the Eat Da Fingers monster will get a proper printing! I'm still brainstorming a third design. I'm not 100% sure if they'll be available next weekend at MCCC. If not, they'll definitely be available at Summit City Comic-Con and also for order online. Again, they'll be printed on cardstock and individually numbered. I'll probably do about 20 of each.

Speaking of Summit City Comic-Con, I will also have an exclusive print for that show. The print will be How Stuff Happens related. It's going to be black, white and blue and printed on white cardstock and individually numbered. Again, probably 20-30 of them. Also, SCCC supplied me with 10 exclusive sketch cards which I'm working on now. I'm trying to figure out pricing and whatnot for them. I'll also be donating a painting for their Hero Initiative auction.

As for How Stuff Happens. I will be doing a big reprint of Issue #1 this week and next week so I'll have them for both conventions. I'll probably bring about 100 copies to each show. I'll be selling them for $1 (sorry, the free ones were for the FCBD warriors!).

And as always, I'll be doing as many sketches as I possibly can. And giving out high fives and hugs and mustaches.

I'll try to update a couple more times before I leave for MCCC. And I'll be reporting back that whole weekend as well. Yay!

Free Comic Book Day 2010 Recap

So I had a somewhat brief but fun FCBD. Due to a death in the family, my schedule got shaken up and I originally had canceled all my signings for the day. But when I got home I felt like nothing would make me feel better like drawing for people. So I headed over to Brainstorm Comics for a bit and then ended my night at The Comic Vault, drawing and sketching alongside Nino and Lil' Nino Mesarina. I have some pictures to share as well. I'd like to thank everyone who came and supported their local shops and artists. Thank you to everyone who grabbed a copy of How Stuff Happens #1. Thank you to everyone who came and high fived me and bought a sketch or a print from me. Thanks to Robert and the Brainstorm guys for being so great to me. Thanks to the Comic Vault staff for making me feel at home and feel like a rockstar. And thank you all for your condolences. My family and myself appreciate it greatly.

This is the cover of the first issue of my new kids comic/coloring book How Stuff Happens!

The ol' standby.

Stanley and his Batman and dad!

Dave Scheidt gave me a dollar to draw Sinestro. So I drew Sinestro on the dollar. Hardy har har.

Okay, so here's the actual Sinestro.

Some of the Comic Vault dudes had me draw them as mountains, How Stuff Happens-style.

The likenesses!

Mary said to draw something cute for her, like a bunny. So I made that bunny a flaming agent of vengeance.

The Comic Vault's own Everett coloring in a copy of How Stuff Happens #1!

And of course, the Dave Scheidt coloring Issue #1 as well.

Good ol' Cap in full color. Thanks for Nino for letting me use his Prismacolors. I think I'm still woozy from the fumes.

We ended FCBD with some delicious gyros at Big Boys Gyros. Batman was just hanging out on a softball trophy.

So that was my wild and crazy FBCD. Thanks again to everyone. Now to work on GSD #2 and prepare for Motor City Comic-Con and Summit City Comic-Con! Yeah!

Dave!

P.S. The Great Sandwich Twitter feed is back up and running on the side panel of the blog. Keep track of that with updates on what stores have what issues in stock, various announcements and of course, mysteries!
