I'm in the process of moving over to my brand new Tumblr page. For now on I will make all posts there. Feel free to look back at the archives but I will no longer be updating this blog. See you at the new one!

Summer!
Hey guys, sorry it's been a while. Most of my updating has been over at the Kill The Wonderhawks fan page on Facebook as well as my personal Twitter account. As you can imagine, KTWH has been keeping me really busy. On top of that, I have some creator own pitches swirling around and possibly some licensed jobs lined up as well.
Just wanted to stop by and give Drawin' Staches some love.
My next con will be Summit City Comic-Con on June 18th at the Grand Wayne Center in Ft. Wayne, IN. It's a really awesome time and the guest lineup is RIDICULOUS. I'll have books and whatnot for sale as usual and I'll be doing sketches all day (I'm also taking pre-order for full commissions). Also, from 1-1:55 PM, I'll be on the Digital Comics panel (hosted by Word Balloon's John Siuntres) along with amazing dudes like Ryan Browne, Dave Wachter and Denver Brubaker. That should be an awesome hour of discussion. Hope to see you all there.
Unfortunately, I have to cancel my appearance at Cherry Capital Con. Time & budget are kind of making it impossible this year. I promise I'll try to make it next year! Sorry!
I'm gonna be appearing on the Comics Slumber Party podcast real soon, so keep an eye/ear out for that!
Let's make this the best summer ever!
Dave!

Wonderhawks Are Go!
If you haven't heard by now, Paper + Plastick Records (owned and operated by Less Than Jake drummer Vinnie Fiorello) announced on Friday that they will now be doing digital comics through their website/webstore. What they also announced is that one of the launch titles is my new series Kill The Wonderhawks. So if you were wondering what the weird thumbnails I was posting were all about, that'd be it. I'm stoked about the new project and it's been so hard not to spill the beans the past few months as we've been developing it. I'm still getting used to the idea that I'm doing a comic for one of my heroes. It's crazy.
I'm also excited to announce that my artist is none other than my good friend Aaron Pittman. We've been trying hard the past couple years to finally work together again and we're really happy to finally be putting something out. And I can also tell you that the pages he's been sending me are insanely awesome (and insane) and I can't wait for you all to see them. And bringing it all together is Alejandro Rosado coloring it. He's really been making the pages pop and we're happy to have him on the team.
So about the series. Kill The Wonderhawks follows a world-renowned team of (anti)heroes, The Wonderhawks, as they're chased across the country by a colorful cast of gangs, assassins and bounty hunters. While on the run, they come across weird clusters of futuristic Americana and take on jobs and missions for reward money. We took all your favorite 70s and 80s teen team cartoons and did horrible things to them in the name of entertainment. It's got all kinds of crazy stuff like kangaroos, blood, brains, naked Texas rangers, hovercrafts, explosions, etc. and it's been insanely fun to let loose writing it.
The issues will be monthly and range from 10-12 pages, full color. They're free to download in the Paper + Plastick store (in exchange for a tweet or Facebook link promoting it) and will be collected in trades in the near future. The other series from Paper + Plastick include "50 States" and "Exit Interview". The first issue of 50 States in available now in the webstore. The first issue of Kill The Wonderhawks should be launching sometime next week.
I do have to put a warning out there to parents: Kill The Wonderhawks is 100% not kid-friendly. It's very much for mature readers so I advise you don't let the young ones read it. I'm hoping to also have some exciting all-ages related news to announce soon as well and I will be putting a new Great Sandwich Detective issue out this summer. So no worries!
I guess that's it for now. Crazy busy! Head over to the Comic Book Queers podcast (on their website or on iTunes) and check out Ep #144 where Joe Faust interviews me about all things nude Texas lawmen. It's a really funny episode and I'd like to thank Joe again for having me on. And thanks as well to all the comics and music sites that have been covering the announcement.
And remember, F&%k you, Wonderhawks are go!

Hey guys, just dropping by with some stuff.
I did a couple Marvel blank variants for the Comic Vault this week and they are now for sale at their Ravenswood location. One is for FF #1 and one is for Fear Itself #1. I plan on doing more of these in the future. I'm not sure what price they're selling them at. Each one is one-of-a-kind, hand-drawn by yours truly. And each one comes with a hand-drawn concept sketch of the cover on a piece of legal pad paper, tucked into the inside cover. And here they are:
I'm finishing up the GSD #6 this week for an end of April release. It will start a three-part series that will wrap up the week of San Diego Comic-Con in July.
A super-awesome project I've been working on with Aaron Pittman will be announced within the next couple of weeks. We're really excited about it and to finally talk about it! Stay tuned for details!
Just a reminder, the Dave Will Only Make A Penny Sale is going on over at IndyPlanet until next Wednesday. Awesome deals on Great Sandwich Detective back issues. And all variant cover purchases benefit the Red Cross. So go pick up some books and tell your friends!

The First Ever Dave Will Only Make A Penny Sale!
UPDATE (4/5/11): IndyPlanet is back up and running and I just edited all the prices. There's a chance they won't change til tomorrow. So I'm officially saying the sale starts tomorrow (4/6) at 2 PM and will go until the end of next Wedneday (4/13). Remember, you can go now and purchase the variants to support the Red Cross.
UPDATE: IndyPlanet's going thru some maintenance which is preventing me from changing the prices of all the comics. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I'm trying to get an answer from IndyPlanet/Ka-Blam about when it will be fixed and so far I've gotten no answers. But rest assured, as soon as I can edit the prices, I will and the sale will go for a week from that time. However, the prices for the variants are correct and I am donating the profit from those to the Red Cross. So if you planned on purchasing those, you can still do that now! Sorry again!
Starting tomorrow morning and going until midnight on April 2nd, all of the comics I sell on IndyPlanet.com will be marked down considerably. So marked down, that I'm only making ONE PENNY off each issue! You might think that's a stupid thing to do and you're right. But as much as I love money, I also love new readers. So this is where you come in. In addition to banking off this sweet deal yourselves, I urge you to recommend The Great Sandwich Detective to a friend/family member/enemy and tell them to take advantage of this awesome limited time offer. So head over to IndyPlanet tomorrow morning and get yourself or someone else some GSD love!
On the flip side, I'm leaving a couple issues at regular price on purpose. Both the Chicago Comic-Con 2010 Variant cover of Issue #3 and the sketch variant of Issue #5 will remain at their $3.99 cover prices but I will be donating my usual issue profit to the Red Cross to help relief efforts in Japan. So some of that money you saved on Issue #1-5, go spend on those special rare covers and help a good cause. On top of that, if you buy the Issue #5 sketch variant and mail it to me, I will personally draw on it and mail it back to you for free!
So head over to IndyPlanet this week and make me a widely read but financially unstable indie comics creator!

Classic GSD Logo
Light blue w/ black ink
Sizes Available: Medium & Large

* There have already been a lot of inquiries about the softball style shirt. I was only able to procure a small amount of them because that's all that was available from my shirt distributor. I do plan on doing more softball shirts in the future for the Awesomestore. Because they look AWESOME!
Free with every purchase will be one of two Great Sandwich Detective buttons!
At the table I will also have copies of The Great Sandwich Detective #1-5. All issues will be $4 each or $15 for all 5 issues! You also get a free sketch.
Unfortunately, Issue #6 will not be out in time for C2E2. It will be coming out March 30th! Sorry! However, for all you technology lovers, including the people who camped out for the iPad2, I will be selling digital copies of Issue #6 at my table. Bring your tablet, phone, flash drive, etc. and I will load the issue in for only $2! The future!
I will also have new copies of How Stuff Happens #1 for only $1!
Check back in a couple days for a preview of some of my C2E2 prints and a few other special items!

Bees! Not The Bees!
Sorry I haven't been updating recently. I've been unbelievably busy with stuff. On top of preparing for con season and finishing up The Great Sandwich Detective #6, I've been preparing two new series that I'm going to be writing (announcements soon, hopefully).
I had a blast at Winter-Con (as usual). Thanks to everyone who came out! This Sunday is the first ever Dan Con at the Orland Park Civic Center. Tons of great talent in one building. You should definitely make it out. I'll have comics, prints, etc and I'll be sketching all day.
I'm getting some cool stuff together for convention season, including new shirts and an art book. I'll keep you updated on it all!
I have a new item up for sale at the Awesomestore. "Bees!" is an approx. 5 1/2 x 7 watercolor print on cardstock, individually signed and numbered in an edition of 24. And they're on sale for the low low price of $2 ($3 with shipping). So you go buy now!

The GSD #6 will be out the week of C2E2. More info and a preview coming very soon.

Straight From The Legal Pad
I have a bad habit of drawing on my legal pads instead of sketchbooks and up until recently it's been a big hassle because I seem to always draw awesome stuff on lined paper. Thankfully I realized if I stick a lamp under my glass desk, I own a giant lightbox to transfer these lovelies to clean paper. So I figured I'd share some of my recent sketches and doodles from my beloved legal pads:

The 365 Project
One of my goals this year is to try to draw something new every day. So I decided to do an artist sketch card every day in 2011. So at the end of the year, I'll have 365 sketch cards. I might start a side-blog where I'll update with new cards. I'll also have these cards in a book at cons this year where I'll sell them for $2 each. I'm also willing to sell the cards online for $2 plus the price of a stamp. So here are the first 8 of the year:

New Year! New Stuff!
Holy crap, it's 2011! Yeah buddy!
I hope you all had an awesome holiday season and are settling into the new year comfortably. As for me, it's the usual business. Trying to get a million things done in the next couple months before con season explodes! Con season starts a bit early this year with a brand new show in February, Dan Con. Definitely looking forward to that. I'm still putting together my 2011 con schedule but it's already shaping up to be an amazing year.
This Saturday is the opening of the 33 1/3 art show at Cup Of Joe in Cedar Falls, IA. 33 1/3 artists each chose an album cover to reinterpret in their own style. I chose Plague Soundscapes by The Locust. The piece is paint marker on glass on the outside and then inside the frame is a spraypainted, busted up record and spraypainted fiber board. If you're in the area on Saturday you should definitely stop by and see the amazing pieces on display.
Plague Soundscapes
Paint marker on glass, spraypaint on vinyl, spraypaint on fiber-board
Approx. 12" x 12" (framed)
$100
On display at Cup Of Joe starting 1/8/2011
Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it out to Iowa this weekend so my signing at Limited Edition Comics will have to be rescheduled to early spring. I'm sorry to everyone who was looking forward to it and I promise I will be out there ASAP. An order of all of the issues of The Great Sandwich Detective will be shipping out there sometime next week!
Besides working on The GSD, I've put my writing hat back on and have been working on a new series called The Tenants. Joining me will be my Alex Ghost partner, Aaron Pittman. So far the pages he's been showing me are unbelievable. I'm very excited. Details are a bit under wraps for now but hopefully we'll have some good news about the series soon.
I suppose that's it for now. The GSD #0 Special Edition may be pushed back a week to February 2nd to accommodate the big Fantastic Four (er-Three) event happening on January 26th. I'll have the update on that shortly. And the series picks back up in Issue #6 which will be out March 16th, just in time for C2E2.
