Hey guys, sorry it's been a while. Most of my updating has been over at the Kill The Wonderhawks fan page on Facebook as well as my personal Twitter account. As you can imagine, KTWH has been keeping me really busy. On top of that, I have some creator own pitches swirling around and possibly some licensed jobs lined up as well.

Just wanted to stop by and give Drawin' Staches some love.

My next con will be Summit City Comic-Con on June 18th at the Grand Wayne Center in Ft. Wayne, IN. It's a really awesome time and the guest lineup is RIDICULOUS. I'll have books and whatnot for sale as usual and I'll be doing sketches all day (I'm also taking pre-order for full commissions). Also, from 1-1:55 PM, I'll be on the Digital Comics panel (hosted by Word Balloon's John Siuntres) along with amazing dudes like Ryan Browne, Dave Wachter and Denver Brubaker. That should be an awesome hour of discussion. Hope to see you all there.

Unfortunately, I have to cancel my appearance at Cherry Capital Con. Time & budget are kind of making it impossible this year. I promise I'll try to make it next year! Sorry!

I'm gonna be appearing on the Comics Slumber Party podcast real soon, so keep an eye/ear out for that!

Wonderhawks Are Go!

If you haven't heard by now, Paper + Plastick Records (owned and operated by Less Than Jake drummer Vinnie Fiorello) announced on Friday that they will now be doing digital comics through their website/webstore. What they also announced is that one of the launch titles is my new series Kill The Wonderhawks. So if you were wondering what the weird thumbnails I was posting were all about, that'd be it. I'm stoked about the new project and it's been so hard not to spill the beans the past few months as we've been developing it. I'm still getting used to the idea that I'm doing a comic for one of my heroes. It's crazy.

I'm also excited to announce that my artist is none other than my good friend Aaron Pittman. We've been trying hard the past couple years to finally work together again and we're really happy to finally be putting something out. And I can also tell you that the pages he's been sending me are insanely awesome (and insane) and I can't wait for you all to see them. And bringing it all together is Alejandro Rosado coloring it. He's really been making the pages pop and we're happy to have him on the team.

So about the series. Kill The Wonderhawks follows a world-renowned team of (anti)heroes, The Wonderhawks, as they're chased across the country by a colorful cast of gangs, assassins and bounty hunters. While on the run, they come across weird clusters of futuristic Americana and take on jobs and missions for reward money. We took all your favorite 70s and 80s teen team cartoons and did horrible things to them in the name of entertainment. It's got all kinds of crazy stuff like kangaroos, blood, brains, naked Texas rangers, hovercrafts, explosions, etc. and it's been insanely fun to let loose writing it.

The issues will be monthly and range from 10-12 pages, full color. They're free to download in the Paper + Plastick store (in exchange for a tweet or Facebook link promoting it) and will be collected in trades in the near future. The other series from Paper + Plastick include "50 States" and "Exit Interview". The first issue of 50 States in available now in the webstore. The first issue of Kill The Wonderhawks should be launching sometime next week.

I do have to put a warning out there to parents: Kill The Wonderhawks is 100% not kid-friendly. It's very much for mature readers so I advise you don't let the young ones read it. I'm hoping to also have some exciting all-ages related news to announce soon as well and I will be putting a new Great Sandwich Detective issue out this summer. So no worries!

Hey guys, just dropping by with some stuff.

I did a couple Marvel blank variants for the Comic Vault this week and they are now for sale at their Ravenswood location. One is for FF #1 and one is for Fear Itself #1. I plan on doing more of these in the future. I'm not sure what price they're selling them at. Each one is one-of-a-kind, hand-drawn by yours truly. And each one comes with a hand-drawn concept sketch of the cover on a piece of legal pad paper, tucked into the inside cover. And here they are:

I'm finishing up the GSD #6 this week for an end of April release. It will start a three-part series that will wrap up the week of San Diego Comic-Con in July.

A super-awesome project I've been working on with Aaron Pittman will be announced within the next couple of weeks. We're really excited about it and to finally talk about it! Stay tuned for details!

UPDATE: IndyPlanet's going thru some maintenance which is preventing me from changing the prices of all the comics. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I'm trying to get an answer from IndyPlanet/Ka-Blam about when it will be fixed and so far I've gotten no answers. But rest assured, as soon as I can edit the prices, I will and the sale will go for a week from that time. Sorry I haven't been updating recently. I've been unbelievably busy with stuff. On top of preparing for con season and finishing up The Great Sandwich Detective #6, I've been preparing two new series that I'm going to be writing (announcements soon, hopefully).

I had a blast at Winter-Con (as usual). Thanks to everyone who came out! This Sunday is the first ever Dan Con at the Orland Park Civic Center. Tons of great talent in one building. You should definitely make it out. I'll have comics, prints, etc and I'll be sketching all day.

I'm getting some cool stuff together for convention season, including new shirts and an art book. I'll keep you updated on it all!

New Year! New Stuff!

Holy crap, it's 2011! Yeah buddy!

I hope you all had an awesome holiday season and are settling into the new year comfortably. As for me, it's the usual business. Trying to get a million things done in the next couple months before con season explodes! Con season starts a bit early this year with a brand new show in February, Dan Con. Definitely looking forward to that. I'm still putting together my 2011 con schedule but it's already shaping up to be an amazing year.

This Saturday is the opening of the 33 1/3 art show at Cup Of Joe in Cedar Falls, IA. 33 1/3 artists each chose an album cover to reinterpret in their own style. I chose Plague Soundscapes by The Locust. The piece is paint marker on glass on the outside and then inside the frame is a spraypainted, busted up record and spraypainted fiber board. If you're in the area on Saturday you should definitely stop by and see the amazing pieces on display.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it out to Iowa this weekend so my signing at Limited Edition Comics will have to be rescheduled to early spring. I'm sorry to everyone who was looking forward to it and I promise I will be out there ASAP. An order of all of the issues of The Great Sandwich Detective will be shipping out there sometime next week!

Besides working on The GSD, I've put my writing hat back on and have been working on a new series called The Tenants. Joining me will be my Alex Ghost partner, Aaron Pittman. So far the pages he's been showing me are unbelievable. I'm very excited. Details are a bit under wraps for now but hopefully we'll have some good news about the series soon.

I suppose that's it for now. The GSD #0 Special Edition may be pushed back a week to February 2nd to accommodate the big Fantastic Four (er-Three) event happening on January 26th. I'll have the update on that shortly. And the series picks back up in Issue #6 which will be out March 16th, just in time for C2E2.

The GSD #5 Christmas Special Sneek Preview!

Ho, ho, h- cough, cough.

Sorry I've been sick for a few days and definitely not loving it. Despite my ailments and the large amount of soup I've consumed over the past 72 hours, I was still able to make it to the Comic Vault on Saturday for Lance Briggs' Holiday Comic Drive. I had a blast despite not being able to speak (my Yeah buddy, No buddy signs worked wonders for communication). I met some great people, great fans and got to meet the big man himself. He wasn't that scary. I just wanna say big ups to Matt Sardo for pretty much just being really awesome. And thanks to everyone who donated their old comics, you're helping a great cause.

So as I promised (although a bit late) here is the preview of the Great Sandwich Detective #5 Christmas Special, aka Toasts Of Christmas Past. I did it a bit differently this time around and did the issue in the style of a storybook. So each page is one big painting with a caption. I know, I know. I just blew your mind. Merry Christmas.

Issue #5 will be in stores December 22nd. It's 32 pages of story, 36 pages total including guest pinups by Art Baltazar and George Rizok.

And as an added Christmas bonus, I am putting the Christmas issue up for sale a week early over at IndyPlanet.com. That's right, this Wednesday, December 15th, you can order the GSD #5 a whole week early! Oh, is that not enough? Also this Wednesday, for one week only I'll also be putting the Chicago Comic-Con 2010 exclusive variant of Issue #3 up in the store as well. Everyone calm down.

Phew.

In non-GSD-related news, I'll be on the artists panel again this Thursday for the December edition of Atomic Sketch at evilOlive in Wicker Park. I'll be joined by other great artists including my brother Danny. Be there.

And that should be my last event appearance of 2010. Man, what a year. But I'll wrap that up later. I'm currently working out my convention schedule for 2011 and I can already tell it's gonna be a great year. New places. New people. Also familiar places and people. All awesome. Good times.

This one is called "The Toasts Of Christmas Past" and features a take on A Christmas Carol with our hero considering retirement after failing to catch a toy thief. Of course ghosts come and talk to him. Of course. Another treat is that this is an extra long issue, clocking in at 32 pages of story & art. And possibly the best present of all? No raised prices! Save that money for other Christmas gifts. $3.99 for a 32 page book? I know, I'm just giving it away! And you think that's it? Nope.

In a couple weeks I have some holiday events going on. I will be part of Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs' holiday toy drive on December 11th at The Comic Vault. Lance and a buncha great local artists will be there signing and sketching and taking your comic book donations that will go to children in need and soldiers overseas. It's an awesome cause. And Atomic Sketch has invited me back to be part of their December show on the 16th. Really looking forward to it as I had a lot of fun at the November show. Come out, have a drink and see some great art. Even my brother Danny will be there drawing his art of questionable content. Fun for everyone over 21.

Hey everybody. Just stopping by to say hello and Happy Thanksgiving. I'm infinitely thankful for all the people who bought my comics and/or came to my table at a con and gave me a chance this year. You are all incredible. I am so lucky to be making comic books at all but to hear your kind words about my work makes it all the greater. So thank you. Hopefully you all have a great and safe holiday and you eat all kinds of food!

If you need a break from the chaos of Black Friday tomorrow, stop by the Comic Vault tomorrow starting at 11 for their Post Apocalyptic Thanksgiving Sale. National Sandwich Day!

The Great Sandwich Detective #4 Out Today!

Today marks the release of The Great Sandwich Detective #4, the Halloween special. It's an amazing issue that features guest stories from my good friends Dave Scheidt and Dave Gruba. It also features a two page backup food monster guide from Joe Tinaglia and amazing pinups from Frank Fosco (TMNT), Ryan Browne (God Hates Astronauts) and Dana Lechtenburg. It's an awesome issue and you should go check it out. It's currently available at The Comic Vault, Brainstorm Comics, G-Mart Comics, Challengers and Chicago Comics. It will also be available to order online at Indyplanet.com in a day or so.

This Saturday from 11-5 at The Comic Vault you can come by to see myself, Dave Scheidt and Dave Gruba as we sign copies of The GSD #4 and hang out. I'll also be doing sketches and I'll have a brand new limited edition watercolor print for sale. We'll also be bringing some candy to give out as well.

To celebrate National Sandwich Day, November 3rd, this year, I will be re-releasing the first ever The GSD comic I ever did, The Great Sandwich Detective vs. The Egg Machine (a.k.a. Issue #0). The special edition will feature all kinds of new stuff. But first, let's take a sneak peek at the cover.

That will be the brand new cover which sets Issue #0 into the usual cover scheme of the series. The issue will also be reformatted from it's original magazine style layout to the modern day comic size that all the other GSD issues are in. It will also feature updated artwork. I didn't re-do the issue but when I originally put it out in a pencil grayscale style. I'm currently reinking the issue so the characters have actual outline. I'll also be reapplying the grayscale scheme but with ink and paint instead. Along with the story will be a new edition of The Sandwich Shop, a pinup gallery featuring art from amazing local artists, original concept art from when I first designed The GSD and more.

And if that's not enough, this issue will come with a "radio play" of the issue featuring my good friend Jacob Carlson as The Great Sandwich Detective and a cast of other great people as the rest of the characters in the issue. There will be a sleeve with a CD with the recording stuck to the inside cover for you to read along to. I will also upload the recording as an .mp3 for anyone to download. I'm really excited about it. If it turns out well, we may be doing other issues in the future.

Plus! Since I am fixing the art from the original pages, the odd format is forcing me to piece the panels together. So I will not have full intact pages as my original boards for this issue. So I'm going to take the random panels and hide them inside random copies of the comic. That's right, I'm giving away original parts of the comic for free! I know, I'm insane.

So there we go. I hope you all are as excited as I am about the special edition.

I'm lining up a special Halloween weekend signing for the release of Issue #4 with myself, Dave Scheidt and Dave Gruba. So stay tuned for details as I should have them soon. Unfortunately, I will no longer be attending Kokomo Con nor Detroit Fan Fare as originally planned. However, the 23rd I will be appearing at the "Norman Osborn For Illinois Governor" rally at G-Mart Comics with a bunch of other awesome artists. So my last con of 2010 will most likely be Austin Comic-Con. Again, I'll have more details on all of the events soon.

Issue #4 is at the printers, I'm finishing up the Issue #0 art and then onward to the Christmas issue!

UPDATE: To promote the launch of The Great Sandwich Detective at G-Mart Comics, I will be appearing there next Friday, October 8th from 3-5 PM. I will be signing copies of books and doing sketches and whathaveyou. So come on out. Brian Walsby of the band Double Negative will also be appearing, signing copies of his books. G-Mart is located at 2641 N Kedzie Ave. in Chicago (Logan Square).

Halloween Special Cover Preview

Hot off the Photoshops, the front cover of the Great Sandwich Detective #4, the Halloween Special!

This is going to be a really awesome issue. I did something different for this one. Instead of it being one long story, I split the issue into three shorts. I invited my friends Dave Scheidt and Dave Gruba to write two of the stories so this is the first time you'll see The GSD done by other writers, which is really awesome. Dave S.'s story is called "Witching Hour" and Dave G.'s is called "Dr. Pickle & Mr. Brine". In between those will be a one page strip I wrote called "Trick 'R Stuff". In the back we'll see amazing pinups by Frank Fosco and George Rizok as well as a special two-page guest backup story written and drawn by Issue #3 pinup artist Joe Tinaglia. Also included with the issue will be a Great Sandwich Detective jack o' lantern pattern. The Great Sandwich Detective #4 will be in stores October 27th.

I got hired to do some fake comic covers for a movie that's filming at Brainstorm soon. I had to switch my style up a bit so it looked like 3 different books from 3 different artists. Here are two of them (the third book is just going to be the cover of The Great Sandwich Detective #3).

This is actually an old Fourth Of July poster I did. I just changed the text and made it even more metal. F**k Yeah Comics sounds like an awesome publisher.
With this one I tried to make a stereotypical indie hipster comic. The photo reference is none other than Aaron Pittman. And of course you can't forget the Helvetica.

Woohoo! Celebration! My 100th blogging on the blog! Yeah buddy.

Ahem.

Tomorrow is the release of The Great Sandwich Detective #3. I'm very proud of this issue. I worked really really hard on it and I hope you all enjoy it. Tomorrow you'll be able to pick up copies at Brainstorm Comics, Challengers Comics and The Comic Vault. (The other stores will have it in a couple weeks. Sorry!).

And tomorrow the Comic Vault will be hosting a release event for The GSD. I'll be there from 12-7 PM, sketching and signing and hanging out. We'll be having a sandwich seminar where you can make your own sandwich and enjoy it with the Comic Vault staff. I'll also have some random giveaways including shirts and prints. And every copy of GSD #3 purchased at The Comic Vault will come with a limited edition poster. Bam!

So I hope to see you all there tomorrow. I know the other comics don't come out til Thursday but let's celebrate sandwiches and detectives together tomorrow! Yeah!

A New Hope

Here's a poster I did for an outdoor screening of A New Hope that we're doing at our apartment this weekend. I did it all digitally using my Wacom tablet. I went with basically a digital approach to cel-drawings and I really like how it turned out. I collaged it all together in Photoshop and added in the band, logo and text. It's borderless, 8.5 x 11. I may redo it soon in 11 x 17 without the additional text about the screening and make prints of it. This was the first big project I've done digitally and again I like the way it turned out. I'm working on a series of pop-culture related prints using this technique and I'll post them as I go along.

I thumbnailed out the portion of the Great Sandwich Detective Halloween issue that I wrote the other night and I'm going to start penciling it this week along with Dave Scheidt's portion. Once I get Dave Gruba's script I'll start thumbnailing his. I have a couple of great pinups lined up as well for this issue. It'll be hitting stores October 27th, just in time for Halloween and Detroit Fanfare.

I'm going to be doing a big re-order this upcoming week to restock most of the stores. So all my carriers should be in stock of Issues #1-3 within the next couple weeks. (Most of the city stores will have Issue #3 on September 8th). I'll also have my books in three new stores: Alternate Reality, G-Mart Comics and Westfield Comics (Madison, WI). I'm also talking to a number of stores as well. I'm still looking to expand to more stores outside of Illinois. If you're one of my out-of-state readers and would like your local shop to carry The GSD, please feel free to contact me.

Good times! I still have some Great Sammich shirts left. I may be putting some over at Brainstorm if you wanna pick one up. I'm going to be printing more soon and I may be opening an online shop to sell those and other stuff. I'm also going to be setting up a way to buy The GSD online soon. So due to a shipping error, I had to push back the store release of Issue #3. If you were one of the lucky few who got a copy of the Comic-Con variant release this past weekend, I hope you enjoyed it. I'm going to be ordering more of the regular Issue #3 for a September 8th retail release. I'm going to try to reschedule the release event for that day as well.

I'm also going to be re-releasing Issue #0 on November 3rd for National Sandwich Day. It's going to feature a new cover, new format, slightly re-tooled artwork and some additional content like new pinups and a very special surprise that I'll be announcing very soon. I'm really excited about it.

The next Great Sandwich Detective is going to be out in October and will be my Halloween special. I'm doing something a little different for this one. Instead of one long story, it's going to be broken down into three short stories. I'll be providing the artwork for all three and writing one of them with two special guests, Dave Scheidt and Dave Gruba providing the other two stories. It's going to be a cool old-school horror story throwback. Don't worry about the little guys, it'll still be safe for them to read. No chainsaw decapitations or anything.

I'm still ironing out my fall convention plans. I may be heading down to Nashville Comic-Con at the end of September and then I'll be doing Kokomo Con in Indiana and Detroit Fan Fare in Michigan in October. And November may see me in Mid-Ohio Con and Austin Comic-Con. I'll have em all cemented very soon.

Chicago Comic-Con Preview!

Woah! It's already time for Chicago Comic-Con! So I figured I'd give a preview of what I'll have available at the table this year. I'm going to be in the Artist Alley at Table #3531. I'll be sharing a table with my good friends Aaron Pittman and Alejandro Rosado. They will also have cool stuff available.

As expected, I will have copies of The Great Sandwich Detective #1 and #2 available. Issue #3 is technically coming out this week. I posted up the cover preview for Issue #3 last week. That's the cover for the regular retail release. Due to a shipping error, the retail copies of Issue #3 will not be available til the end of August. I apologize for that but it was a totally unforseen hiccup. However, I will have Issue #3 available at Chicago Comic-Con in the form of a CCC-exclusive variant cover which I am proud to unveil right now:

This is going to be in limited quantity seeing as this was supposed to a limited exclusive alongside the regular retail copies of Issue #3. So if you really want Issue #3 this week you better get out to Comic-Con and pick one up!

Keeping up with my Summer Of Prints, I will have a brand new exclusive print for the convention. If you're a fan of the Ghosts! print and a fan of the 3D movie craze, you'll love this:

The print will be 8.5 x 11 on white cardstock. They will be limited to 25 copies and will be hand numbered and signed. Each print also comes with a pair of white 3D cardstock glasses. If you have a pair of old school anaglyph glasses available (red & blue lenses), you can preview the greatness above.

I will also have a limited run Great Sandwich Detective shirt for sale as well.

The red shirt with black logo will be available in small and medium. They are handscreened on preshrunk 100% cotton shirts. ($5)

I will also have leftover prints from previous shows, original artwork and paintings and other random stuff as well. And of course, I'll be doing sketches all weekend. I'm doing $1 b & w sketches, $3 color sketches and any full size (11x14 Bristol) commissions will be based on the request.

For all you aspiring detectives out there, there will also be a Great Sandwich Detective scavenger hunt game throughout the weekend at the convention center. Hidden all over the convention center will be cardstock sandwiches. They will be stuck to walls, booths, garbage cans, bathroom stalls, etc. Each sandwich will have a random QR code printed on it. QR codes can be scanned on smartphones using a barcode scanner app. Each QR code is redeemable for a free prize at our booth including prints, shirts and comics. So happy hunting!

There will also be mini Great Sandwich Detective papercraft dolls hidden all over the convention center. If you can find him, you can keep him!

I think that just about covers it. I will be updating all weekend on my personal Twitter account (I promise to try to keep it clean for the kids) and I'll try to upload pictures throughout the weekend.

Zombie Con 2 Recap

I had a very brief but very awesome time at Zombie Con 2 this past Saturday at The Comic Vault. I met some great people, got to hang out with some familiar faces and more importantly, got to draw some zombies. I have a couple sketches to share:

The Comic Vault has officially sold out of both The Great Sandwich Detective Issue #1 and Issue #2. That is absolutely insane. Thank you to everyone who bought a copy. That means the world to me. Please share it with your friends and family and enjoy it. That's why I do the book and I'm happy to see more and more people going out and grabbing a copy. You are all awesome. I'm going to drop off some more copies of Issue #1 this week and I'm placing an order for more copies of Issue #2 tomorrow. So I will replenish The Comic Vault with #2 and also get some copies down to Tenth Planet and Fantasy Books.

I am doing an SDCC-exclusive print for Geekscape, the greatest geek podcast on Earth. They're going to have a booth there this year with all kinds of great stuff and Jonathan agreed to carry the print. So stop by there throughout the week of the con, pick up a print, smack Gilmore around and have fun. I'll post a picture of the print online tomorrow.

The Great Sandwich Detective #2 Out Today (In Chicago)!

Today marked the Chicago release of the new issue of The Great Sandwich Detective, which concludes the "No Crying Over Spilled Milk" storyline that began in Issue #1. Copies are currently available at Brainstorm Comics, The Comic Vault, Chicago Comics and Challengers Comics. The suburban and out of state stores will be receiving them within the next two weeks (follow the Twitter feed to see what stores get them in stock). I'm very proud of the way this issue turned out. I'd like to thank my good friends Aaron Pittman and Leslie Gauthier for providing me amazing pinup sketches and of course a huge shout-out to Diego Abundis, whose story "The Great Potato Spy" appears in the back of this issue. And thanks to John Layman for his kind words about the series. I think it goes without saying that you should be reading his book Chew every month.

So the next issue will be coming out in August right around the time for Chicago Comic-Con. I'm still deciding whether I'm going to release it in the stores the Wednesday before or the Wednesday after the con. What will probably happen is I'll have copies for sale at Chicago Comic-Con and then the stores will have copies for sale the following Wednesday. I'll have those details ironed out shortly.

My next event will be an in-store event for the release of X-Men #1. Brainstorm is having an awesome party to celebrate. We're gonna have a bunch of awesome guests on hand to draw all over your blank cover variants and Brainstorm will also be having raffles and giveaways all day. You should check it out. I'll also have a new set of 4 watercolor X-Men prints for sale. Here's a preview of one of them:

Issue #2 is currently being printed over at Ka-Blam and should be shipping out on June 25th and should arrive in time for the intended June 30th release date. On the last shipment of Issue #1, Ka-Blam provided me with three blank sketch cards to draw on. I'm going to randomly place them in copies of Issue #2. Happy hunting.

I have some cool in-store events lined up for July and August, leading up to Chicago Comic-Con 2010. July 8th I will be appearing alongside Nino Mesarina, Alejandro Rosado and some other great artists TBA for Brainstorm Comics' X-Men #1 release event. We'll be hanging out that day sketching on your blank sketch cover variants of X-Men #1 and doing other awesome stuff. I'll have a new set of X-Men prints for that day as well. More info will be announced shortly. August 14th I'll be appearing again with Nino along with his son Lil' Nino and comics legend Frank Fosco at Monster Island Toys in Chicago. And finally, another event will take place at Brainstorm on August 19th, the day of Preview Night of Chicago Comic-Con 2010. I'm getting together a great group of artists to hang out, draw, sign etc. and we'll be welcoming the Comic Book Syndicate from Windsor-Ontario, Canada as they come down to film an episode of their show in the store. More details on all these great events will be announced.

I had a fun time this past weekend at C3 2010. I saw some familiar faces and met some new great people and had an all around good time. The lack of copies of Issue #1 was a bit of a pain but oh well, things happen. Thanks to those that came by and bought prints, copies of How Stuff Happens #1 and sketch cards. No Copies Of GSD #1 for C3 :(

Unfortunately due to a shipping miscommunication, I will not have copies of The Great Sandwich Detective #1 with me for sale this weekend. This sucks a great deal. What I will do, however, is bring along my laptop which will have a slideshow of all the pages and you can read through the issue for FREE! I know it's not as cool as holding a copy in your hand but I'd like for everyone to at least get to enjoy the story. And if you donate $1, I will show you the first five pages of Issue #2 which comes out June 30th.

I will have copies of How Stuff Happens #1 as well as prints and other good stuff and I'll be doing sketches and commissions all weekend. I will be in the Artists section next to the always wonderful Leslie Gauthier. So come on by for some high fives and awesomeness.

Sneak Peek Of The Great Sandwich Detective Issue #2

Issue #2 comes out June 30th, so I figured I would share a couple pages with you. If you haven't read Issue #1, a couple of the jokes kinda spoil the end of Issue #1, so beware.

Fun! So yes, the conclusion of the epic two-parter "No Crying Over Spilled Milk" goes down in Issue #2 out June 30th. The issue will also feature a special backup story by first grader Diego Abundis and a pinup by my good friend Aaron Pittman.

As for Issue #1, it is in stock at Brainstorm Comics, Chicago Comics and The Comic Vault in Chicago, IL and Get Your Game On in Ann Arbor, MI. I have ordered more copies to take with me to Cherry Capital Con in Traverse City, MI next weekend and whatever I have left paired with a second order I'll be putting through next Friday will go to the remaining stores waiting for copies. By June 30th, all stores carrying the GSD will have copies of both Issues #1 & #2.

For those planning on attending Cherry Capital Con next weekend, I will be in the Artists Alley at Booth #E10. I will have copies of The Great Sandwich Detective #1, old prints and How Stuff Happens #1. This con season has been amazing thus far. I had a blast at the first ever Summit City Comic-Con, held in unbelievably nice Ft. Wayne, IN. I've never been treated so well at a show before. It was absolutely amazing. The volunteers were great and of course the host with the most, Zack Kruse, was the man.

I had a really fun time on the panel with Art, Mike and Dan. Totally felt like a rockstar, even it was for only 55 minutes. The kids and adults all seemed to have fun and they asked some good questions. Big ups to John Siuntres from Wordballoon.com for moderating and keeping it interesting. I should have a video up sometime this week.

I'd also like to thank everyone who came out and supported this con in its first year. You, the fans, made it a success. You're all awesome. Thank you all for coming by the table and picking up copies of my books and hanging out and high fiving. You were all so very kind to me and made my experience at SCCC that much better.

So just an update on GSD #1. I announced a May 26th store release. That is partially true. Some stores will have them tomorrow. Due to the overwhelming response to the book the past two weekends at the conventions, I was left with very limited stock. So I split the remaining stock between Brainstorm Comics, The Comic Vault and Chicago Comics (at the time I'm writing this, I will be bringing them to Chicago Comics in the morning). Get Your Game On in Ann Arbor, MI also has them and may have already had them out for sale. I am placing an emergency re-order this week. When I receive them, I will be delivering copies to Tenth Planet, Challengers, Fantasy Books and then whoever else requests them. To make up for the fact that some of the stores will get delayed stock, I will be randomly inserting one of a kind artist sketch cards in various copies. So just to recap: You can go to Brainstorm, The Comic Vault and Chicago Comics tomorrow and pick up copies. All other stores will be receiving them in a couple of weeks.

How Stuff Happens #2 will be coming out June 9th (just in time for Cherry Capital Con) and will be entitled "How Toast Is Made". It's gonna be fun stuff. I'll post a preview pic up next week. There are still copies of How Stuff Happens #1 available at Brainstorm and The Comic Vault. I'm gonna work on a massive reprint soon so I can give copies to other stores as well. As for GSD #2, I have it slotted for a June 30th release date. After that, it will be going to the bi-monthly schedule with Issue #3 coming out August 18th, just in time for Chicago Comic-Con.

I suppose that's it for now. I'm super busy wrapping up GSD #2 and other projects. But I'm having such an amazing time doing this and meeting all you wonderful people. Woo!

Summit City Comic-Con Preview

Summit City Comic-Con 2010 is only a couple days away, so I decided to give you all a little preview of some of the stuff I'll have with me.

This is my contribution to the silent auction they will be holding to benefit the Hero Initiative. If you aren't aware of the Hero Initiative, click here for more info. It's an amazing cause that I'm very proud to be a part of. I urge you to bid on all the pieces that will be available from all the artists this weekend. You'll definitely be making a difference. My piece is called "The Great Sandwich Detective vs. The World" and is obviously a parody of one of the opening pages of the first Scott Pilgrim book (or for all you newbies, the movie poster featuring Michael Cera). It's watercolor and ink on 11x14 Bristol board.

All of the artists were given 10 really cool SCCC-exclusive sketch cards to draw on for the show. I went with a mustache theme for mine (big surprise). So from left to right, starting at the top, they go: Dr. Doom, The Thing, Godzilla, MODOK, Bane, Swamp Thing, Max Rebo, Sinestro and Kilowog. They are all done in blue sketch pencil with some being outlined or inked entirely. If you'll notice, one card is missing. I left that card blank for a reason. Just like the Robocop drawing I held at Motor City, I'm doing a drawing this weekend. If you stop by my table and purchase anything (sketch, comic, print, etc.), I'll enter your name into a cup. I'll pick a winner about a half hour before the show is over and that winner gets to pick what I draw on the 10th card and then I will hand that card over to said person. Only exception is I'm gonna draw a mustache on whatever character you pick. Y'know. You can also enter by donating $1 to the Hero Initiative.

Also for sale this weekend will be copies of The Great Sandwich Detective #1, How Stuff Happens #1 and leftover Robocop prints from Motor City. I will also be doing sketches for $1 and small paintings for $3. I will be be open to doing commission work but seeing as the show is only one 8 hour day, I'll more than likely have to take that work home with me and then mail it to you. I'll also have my portfolio with me which includes some original art I'm willing to part with.

I'll also have an exclusive Summit City Comic-Con print for sale. It will be printed on white, matte cardstock and individually numbered. I will have 40 of them with me. They will be watercolor and ink. I don't know the exact sizing yet as I'm still working on it. I'll will have an exact size plus a picture of it posted by tomorrow night. It is going to be How Stuff Happened-related and super cool.

Another thing I'm really excited about is the All Ages Comics panel I'm going to be part of. I will be joining Art Baltazar (Tiny Titans), Mike Norton (Billy Batson & The Magic Of Shazam) and Dan Davis (Cartoon Network) in a Q&A panel about All Ages/Kids comics. It's an interactive panel with hopes that the little ones will get involved and ask us all kinds of questions. I'm really humbled and honored to be a part of this, especially since it's my first ever panel. My friend will be taping it and we'll post it online next week. That takes place from 11-11:55 AM. So I'll be in the Artists Alley for the first hour of the show, then the panel for about an hour and then back in the Alley. Really looking forward to it.

My convention schedule is getting busier. I'll be heading back to the Mitten State next month for Cherry Capital Con in Traverse City, MI, June 12th & 13th. It's gonna be a great show with some great guests (cough-Steve Dillon-cough). I'll also be at Kokomo Con in Kokomo, IN on October 23rd and I plan on also attending Mid-Ohio Con in November. I'll keep my calendar updated with those dates.

Motor City Comic-Con 2010 - Day 3!

And so another Motor City Comic-Con comes to a close. I had such a blast this year that I'm bummed it went by so fast. I wish I could do shows like that every day. I'd like to thank all the awesome people who came by the table and hung out this weekend. I'd like to thank all the creators I met who were so unbelievably nice to me. Hearing Sergio Aragones compliment your comic book is a hard thing to accept as reality.

So I'll get back to the grind and work more on the GSD #2 this week. I expect it to be in stores on June 30th. And remember, Issue #1 comes out in the Chicagoland areas as well as some other random stores on May 26th. If your local shop would like to carry it, please contact me and I'd be glad to send them copies.

Well, only 5 more days 'til the next convention! See you at Summit City Comic-Con next weekend!

Motor City Comic-Con 2010 - Day 2!

Another rip-roaring day at Motor City Con 2010. Today was even more awesome than yesterday. Tons of traffic in the Artists Alley. I love it. The 'staches were a huge hit, even drawing the attention of Maryann from Gilligan's Island! Oh yeah! So tomorrow is sadly the last day so I'm hoping to meet even more awesome people. So if you haven't already, come by and give me a high five or hug and get a sketch or something. And if you have already, just come back again! So here's the bunch of pictures I promised. Enjoy.

Motor City Comic-Con 2010 - Day 1!

Day 1 of Motor City Comic-Con 2010 was a blur! I'm sitting here in the lobby of the Courtyard Marriot, exhausted and full of Tubby's taco burger sub. Ohhhh yeahhhh. Today was a lot of fun despite it being pretty slow. Thank you to all who stopped by the table and bought prints and comics and whatnot. You all made my day. I didn't take a whole ton of photos because I was kinda out of it today. I'll try to take more pictures during the day tomorrow. So just a recap of what I have available at the table.

So I'm very very busy preparing for the next couple weeks. I'm working on exclusive prints, new print sets, posters, etc. as well as working on the next issue of The Great Sandwich Detective. I thought I'd toss a couple pictures up and let you know about the progress I'm making.

This is a quick snapshot of the exclusive print I made for Motor City Comic-Con 2010. This is watercolor and ink and approximately 5 1/2 x 8 1/2. It will be printed on 65 lb. beige cardstock, the same type I used for the Ghosts! prints. I will only be printing 20 of these (they will be individually numbered) and they will be $5. If you are going to Motor City Comic-Con and would like to pre-order one, just shoot me an e-mail. I will only pre-order up to 5 and the other 15 will be first come, first serve.

This is the finished version of the zombie painting I posted up a while back. I did this for my friend Matt Murphy's Hall of Zombies in his new apartment. I'm gonna have him snap a picture of it once it's framed and hanging up!

Right now I'm sketching out the three designs for the new print triptych. As I mentioned before, they're going to be monster-themed. I know so far I'm going to be doing one of a yeti that I've been doodling a lot lately and also finally the Eat Da Fingers monster will get a proper printing! I'm still brainstorming a third design. I'm not 100% sure if they'll be available next weekend at MCCC. If not, they'll definitely be available at Summit City Comic-Con and also for order online. Again, they'll be printed on cardstock and individually numbered. I'll probably do about 20 of each.

Speaking of Summit City Comic-Con, I will also have an exclusive print for that show. The print will be How Stuff Happens related. It's going to be black, white and blue and printed on white cardstock and individually numbered. Again, probably 20-30 of them. Also, SCCC supplied me with 10 exclusive sketch cards which I'm working on now. I'm trying to figure out pricing and whatnot for them. I'll also be donating a painting for their Hero Initiative auction.

As for How Stuff Happens. I will be doing a big reprint of Issue #1 this week and next week so I'll have them for both conventions. I'll probably bring about 100 copies to each show. I'll be selling them for $1 (sorry, the free ones were for the FCBD warriors!).

And as always, I'll be doing as many sketches as I possibly can. And giving out high fives and hugs and mustaches.

I'll try to update a couple more times before I leave for MCCC. And I'll be reporting back that whole weekend as well. Yay!

Free Comic Book Day 2010 Recap

So I had a somewhat brief but fun FCBD. Due to a death in the family, my schedule got shaken up and I originally had canceled all my signings for the day. But when I got home I felt like nothing would make me feel better like drawing for people. So I headed over to Brainstorm Comics for a bit and then ended my night at The Comic Vault, drawing and sketching alongside Nino and Lil' Nino Mesarina. I have some pictures to share as well. I'd like to thank everyone who came and supported their local shops and artists. Thank you to everyone who grabbed a copy of How Stuff Happens #1. Thank you to everyone who came and high fived me and bought a sketch or a print from me. Thanks to Robert and the Brainstorm guys for being so great to me. Thanks to the Comic Vault staff for making me feel at home and feel like a rockstar. And thank you all for your condolences. My family and myself appreciate it greatly.

R.I.P. Grampi

At 1:15 AM this morning, my grandfather, Patrick Mangan, passed away. I wanted to say a few words about him. I know a stupid art blog is not the most glorious venue for commemorating someone, but my grandfather lived a modest and normal life. There won't be newspaper articles, mass public memorials, TV specials about him or anything like that. So this is the best way I know how. I don't know exactly how many people come here daily, or at all for that matter, but I wanted to share these few words. I don't have a doodle or a sketch or a painting to offer for a situation like this. Just my words. And I hope you can find the time to read them.

My grandfather did not fight in a war or build a skyscraper or save someone from a burning building. But that doesn't mean he was not a hero. He came to America and worked like many respectable Irishmen who wanted a better life. He fell in love and had children but then had to live through the loss of his wife. That alone would have me cowering in a corner, ready to give up. But he didn't. He raised a son and two daughters, one of which is my mother, the most wonderful person on Earth. To me, a hero can be nothing more than an honest and decent man.

For the past nine years, he lived with an aortic aneurysm that should have killed him within a couple years. Nine years. I lay around like a baby when I have a cold. When his aneurysm finally did burst yesterday evening, he was put through a surgical procedure with a 50% mortality rate. He survived it. And he still lived in the ICU for a couple more hours after that. He fought all he could but he couldn't do it any longer. And no one can fault him for that. He survived more, physically and spiritually, than most people ever will. That's a hero.

I'll end this with taking solace in what my best friend, Dave Scheidt told me yesterday to comfort me. "We should all aspire to be as bad ass as our grandfathers."

If you read through all of this, whether you've ever met my grandfather or not, or even me for that matter, thank you.

All Hail The Dark Lord!

So the Christmas of beer geekery happened yesterday: Dark Lord Day at Three Floyds Brewpub in Munster, IN. Such an awesome time. I drank a lot, got some good food, had a great day with friends, saw Brian Azzarello's scary ass and most importantly, got my bottle of Dark Lord 2010 which will join my '09 bottles hiding in my closet.

So naturally to kill the time between drinking beers, I got some doodling done. It got to the point where I was trading sketches for tastings. Met some awesome people that way. Good times all around!

Speaking of great days in geekery, this Saturday is Free Comic Book Day! I have a crazy hectic schedule that day. I will be appearing at Brainstorm Comics, G-Mart Comics and The Comic Vault and I'm awaiting word about appearing at The Zone Comics in Homewood, IL as well. I should have that confirmed shortly with times and all. I would be appearing with two great creators, Nino Mesarina (who I will also be signing with at The Comic Vault later that day) and Frank Fosco (TMNT, Savage Dragon, etc.). So yeah, I should have an updated schedule shortly. I will be releasing a limited quantity of the first issue of my early readers book "How Stuff Happens". So make sure you bring the kids out to get their copies. I'll be signing and doing as many sketches as I can. It's gonna be an exhausting but awesome day. Hope to see you all there! Busy, busy, busy. I have been reallllly busy getting ready for what it going to be an event-packed May. For starters, I will be signing at three stores next weekend for Free Comic Book Day. I will be appearing at Brainstorm Comics, G-Mart Comics and The Comic Vault. Please refer to my schedule for times and such. I will be giving out (limited!) free copies of the first edition of my early readers book "How Stuff Happens", signing whatever your heart desires, doing as many sketches as possible and I will also have a limited edition FCBD print for sale. It's gonna be rad.

I'll also have an exclusive print for Motor City Comic-Con, which I'm working on now. I'll also have a new set of 3 prints for sale.

I will be contributing a painting for the Hero Intiative auction at Summit City Con as well. I urge you to bid on it for a great cause! I'll also be doing 10 Summit City Con sketch cards which will be put up for sale as well.

I have FINALLY ordered copies of Great Sandwich Detective #1! FINALLY! They will be arriving at my doorstep just in time for Motor City Con. Whatever stock I have left after Summit City Con will be split up between all the stores that have been waiting for copies to be released on May 26th. So if you're not going to any of the cons, you'll be able to get GSD #1 at the end of May! I'm working on Issue #2 as I write this with plans to release it in June.

So convention season is almost upon us and I'm really excited. I'll be kicking off May with my Free Comic Book Day World Tour! So far I will be signing at Brainstorm Comics and The Comic Vault. I'm hoping to add one or two more stores to that list so it's a full day of it. I will be debuting the first little issue of my other non-GSD-related project. This is a book geared more towards little kids, whereas GSD is kind of a book for everyone. Not to say older folks won't find the humor in my new project but I'm making it easier for beginning readers to be able to read. I'll also have some stuff for sale that day including a brand new print. Two weeks after that I'll be at Motor City Con (Novi, MI) and the following week at the brand new Summit City Con (Fort Wayne, IN). They have some cool stuff planned for Summit City Con including a charity auction of pieces donated by all the artists. You should check it out.

Slowly but surely working on Issue # 2. I still aim to have it out in May. I'm behind on ordering more copies of Issue #1 and I apologize to the stores and readers who have been waiting for it. I plan to finally put the order in within the next couple weeks. If not, you can smack me. I'll definitely have copies in time for the cons but I'd like to be able to restock the local shops first. I also plan on re-releasing Issue #0 with a variant cover.

2) My Free Comic Book Day offering will actually be non-GSD related.
3) I will have a new set of three prints, which will be monster-related. They'll still be the same size as the old Spidey, Rorschach and Ghost Rider prints. In fact, they'll be a little more even for a uniform set.
4) I will have an exclusive print for each convention I do this summer.
5) After Issue #3, I'm gonna work simultaneously on Doodle to try to get it out by next year.

One of the best feelings in the world, at least to me, is seeing your artwork displayed in someone's home.

Some doodles to warm up for some new commissions. I now realize I have a crapload of stuff to work on.

And as if I'm not busy enough, I'm gonna start working on a new website soon. I decided it's time to retire the ol' blog for a more practical setup. I'll still do regular updates but I'd like for the art and stuff to be more organized and presented in a nicer fashion instead of being buried with stories about me pooping and long, boring recaps of conventions. So keep checking in for more info on that.

And if all that nonsense wasn't enough, I'm looking for more work. I've decided to branch back out into doing concert posters again. I used to do them all the time back in the day and I figure I should do them again. So if your band or a band you know wants some quality artwork for their show instead of a picture copied from Google with text overlayed in MS Paint, please drop me a line. If I charge you, it definitely will not be a lot. I'd rather have my work get out there more than overcharge for pictures of monsters and food!

Wintercon 2010 Recap

I had a lot of fun signing at The Comic Vault yesterday as part of Wintercon 2010. The staff there rocks. They have a true sense of community there and I felt very welcome right off the bat (the free beers didn't hurt either). Thank you to all that stopped in all weekend and supported all the Chicago artists and thank you to everyone to bought a print or a sticker from me. I have 17 prints left and I'm selling them for $5 a piece. If you're interested in one, please e-mail me. I'm going to have a new set of three prints for the conventions this summer. I'll also have a convention exclusive sketchbook to unveil as well.

So my next scheduled appearance is Motor City Con in May. I will be traveling up there with my good friend and fellow friend of super models, Aaron Pittman. At this point, I have officially been rejected from C2E2, so unless something changes, I'll just be there as a spectator this year.

I'm going to be speaking to a couple classes about comic book art at Hibbard Elementary School in March. I'll let you all know how that goes. I'm really looking forward to telling kids how fun it is to act like a goofball and draw food.

Wintercon 2010 & Others

This Sunday, February 21st, I will be appearing at Wintercon 2010 at The Comic Vault in Chicago, IL. The event takes place all day Saturday and Sunday and features a rotating lineup of some very awesome Chicago artists/creators including Nino Mesarina, Tim Seeley and Tony Maldonado. There will be special promotions throughout the show. I will be appearing, as I said above, on Sunday the 21st from 4-6 PM.

I will be signing anything you'd like, from copies of GSD #0 and #1 (if you were lucky to get any of the early release, handmade Indy Comic Book Week copies from Brainstorm Comics in January), pictures, stuff, your buttcheek, etc. I will be of course doing as many sketches as I possibly can in two hours. I will also have a brand new limited edition print for sale. The print will come in three different color variations (blue/green, red/orange and black/gray/white) on 4 x 11, 67 lb. beige cardstock with a neat border. I'll also have a bunch of one-of-a-kind pen & crayon stickers for sale. And when I mean one-of-a-kind, I really mean it. Each one is hand-drawn and colored and will be the only one in existence. So come rummage through those. I'll also be selling whatever random sketch cards and portfolio stuff I have in my briefcase. I still have the old Spidey, Ghost Rider and Rorschach prints and I'm trying to get rid of those as I plan on having a new set for this summer's convention season. I, unfortunately, will not have copies of The Great Sandwich Detective #1 with me. All the copies I made for Indy Comic Book Week are sold out as far as I know. I am placing an order through Kablam for a large stock this upcoming week as soon as my tax return comes in.

So expect an early March widespread release of GSD #1. I will have issue #2 out by sometime in April. I will also have something special for Chicagoland comic stores for Free Comic Book Day in May. I will have more info on that as it unfolds.

So Wintercon will kind of be the early kickoff for convention season. I will be registering my table in the Artist Alley for Motor City Con (May 14th-16th in Novi, MI) in the upcoming week or so. I'll be joined by my Alex Ghost partner Aaron Pittman. Like I said previously, I will have a new set of prints, copies of Issues #0, #1 and #2 and I'm also working on a summer convention exclusive sketchbook. I also promise to continue my tradition of cardstock, wearable mustaches for you, your friends and random celebrities to wear throughout the shows. I also hope that by the end of the summer/convention season, I will have the Food Book near completion and ready for publishing.

I guess that's it for now. I will have pictures of the prints up as well as pictures from Wintercon early next week. I don't have an absolute ton of new art to show you but I'd like to share a poster I made for my roommate and myself's birthday party we had a few weeks ago. I think it's pretty rad.

Indy Comic Book Week, Early Copies Of Issue #1

Sorry it's been a while. Things have been hectic. Issue #1 was completed and had an early printing for Indy Comic Book Week this past week. I was a guest at Brainstorm Comics where I signed copies and hung out all day talking all things geek with the staff and customers alike. Issue #1 hasn't officially come out though. I brought a very limited number with me just for that day. I am placing an order for a full stock this Friday for a tentative official release in a couple of weeks. Once I have a confirmation of my printing, I will make an official release date. So on that day, Issue #1 will be released at all stores that carry it. Currently, there are a few early copies left on the shelf only at Brainstorm Comics. So if you wanna get it ahead of the full-scale release, I suggest you hurry over there before they are gone. I'd just like to give a big thanks to Robert, Sean and Matt at Brainstorm for having me as a guest and a big thanks to those that came out and bought a copy and hung out. Ya'll made a big kid's dream come true for one day.

Issue #0 is currently out of stock at most places that carry it. I also currently have no copies printed. I will be placing an order at the end of the month for more copies so I can re-stock the stores (plus some other stores) in early February. However, after that, it may be the last printing of Issue #0 for a while.

At the moment, I'm figuring out my schedule of release for GSD. With the amount of work I put into each issue plus working a full-time job it's hard to make a deadline for myself. I may be implementing a bi-monthly release schedule. It sucks but it may be the only way to ensure that I have a set release schedule instead of a sporadic one. I'd rather have an even month between issues than have two come out back to back then release one three months later. Nothing is set in stone right now.

I'm currently working on Issue #2 right now. I have the story outlined (the conclusion of the "No Crying Over Spilled Milk" storyline) and I started thumbnailing with hopes to start pencilling pages by next week. I may have this issue out by the end of February before I implement the bi-monthly release schedule.

With winter fully in effect, that means only one thing: convention season is only about 3 1/2 months away. I'm starting to make plans now. I'll for sure be back in Novi, MI this May for Motor City Con 2010. That month I may also be heading down to Texas with my good buddy Nino Mesarina for TableCon Texas. It's a toss-up between that and Staple Expo in Austin, TX. I'll be ironing those plans out within the next month. I'm currently on the waiting list for C2E2, so we'll see how that goes. Definite yes on Chicago Comic-Con 2010. There's one other bigger show I'm looking at as well. Plus the array of local shows and cons which I love just as much. So expect my schedule box to be filling up within the next couple months.

Wow, I've typed quite a bit. I hope everyone's holidays were great. I'm gonna get back to work on the funny books!

Happy National Sandwich Day!

I apologize for the delay in updates. I've been very busy with work and life that I haven't found time to get on here and keep things up to date. I hope you all had an awesome Halloween and more importantly a great National Sandwich Day. I know some of you celebrated by going out and picking up an copy of GSD #0. I know Issue #1 had been very delayed and I apologize for that as well. I am trying to find time this week to wrap up the last few pages. Once that's done, I just need to arrange and letter and it's ready to go to print. I am planning some cool things for the release. I also plan to have this be one big release as opposed to Issue #0 where different shops got stock at different times. I'm going to make it a point to get it out to the stores prior to the release date so that they can all put it out at the same time.

I recently did an art demo for Montana spraypaint at the Dick Blick in Wheaton, IL. I had a blast demonstrating and painting in front of everyone. The crowd was so awesome. The finished painting is actually hanging at the store so you can go check it out there. You can even make a bid on it (I think). Here's a shot of the finished piece:

As some of you may know, my good friends David Gruba and Rene Castellano just released a brand new book, Bride Of Wolfman. I had the honor of seeing pages and character designs for the book a while back and it's such a cool story. I definitely urge you to hit up your local shop for it. If they don't carry it, demand it!

Unfortunately I won't be a part of the new C2E2 show this year. But a lot of great artists are going to be on hand so you should definitely go out and show your support for local Chicago artists. I think my next show will be Tablecon which I believe is sometime in January. I will keep you all posted. As for now, I need to get some sleep!

Chicago Comic-Con '09 Recap (For Real)

Okay, so there was a bit of a delay in my Comic-Con recap. I've been really busy with work and preparing GSD #1 (I got a lot of awesome things planned for the release). But finally here it is, my official CCC '09 recap. (This is gonna be a pretty long post because I have some other cool stuff to talk about after the recap).

Of all the years I've gone to Wizard World Chicago (now dubbed Chicago Comic-Con), I've never been part of the show. I've gone and bought tons and tons of crap and hung out in the Artist Alley, either talking to artists I knew locally or drooling over original artwork some other pros. But I never had a table until this year. Best way to put it was I was extremely excited and very unprepared. The con always seems to sneak up on me and pair that with my recent move, I totally didn't have time to do everything I wanted to do for the show. But I had a wonderful time nonetheless. This year the big three didn't show up so fortunately for us artists, that meant the alley was flooded with con-goers all weekend. It was really awesome to see the convention being about the artists again. We met a lot of great people over the weekend. I'd like to thank everyone who came by and gave us hugs and high fives and bought our stuff. If you happen to come across my blog and you bought a sketch or painting from me, I'd really really appreciate it if you could send me a scan of it as I didn't get a chance to snap a picture of everything I did that weekend. I'd love to put it up here! I do have some pictures to share though. So check em out below. This weekend was a blur of drawing, people in costumes, us dancing to mariachi music, convention pretzels, underpants and insanity. To sum it up, greatness. I'd also like to thank all the artists and creators we met this weekend who gave kind words and hung out. The comic community is really awesome, especially the one here in Chicago. I guess I thought I had more to write but I guess not, haha. So check the pics out and then I'll have some more to say after that.

Galactus neither. This was the point in the convention when I ran out of sketchbook paper and started painting on paper towel from the bathroom. I think it looks nice.

This was an old practice sketch from my portfolio. I do a lot of exercises where I'll make a vague shape and then attempt to turn it into something. I really really liked this piece.

We found Sandman in the garbage can by our table and decided to class him up and make him our mascot! He's in my closet at my apartment as I type this. Expect to see him more often folks.

That was exciting wasn't it? Shake your head yes. There you go.

As I said before, I am still finishing up The Great Sandwich Detective #1. It's almost finished and I'm setting it up for a mid-September release. It's turning out really awesome. I'm sorry it's taking so long but there's a lot that goes into it and like I've said a million times before, I don't always have the time with work and everything. But I do have some awesome promo stuff in the works for the release of the issue that's gonna be a lot of fine. I also plan to release this on a fuller scale as opposed to the staggered releasing I've unfortunately had to do with Issue #0. I've gotten some copies into some stores in the city. You can pick a copy up at Challengers as well as Brainstorm (which is sadly closing in October, so please go there and buy a million things!). I still have to stop by Chicago Comics and Quimby's. And I also still need to mail some copies out to the suburban stores as well as the out-of-state stores. If you know of a store that would carry GSD, please please let me know. I don't care what state it's in, I'll send some to them. But for Issue #1, all the stores that carry GSD will all get copies at the same time. I promise. Keep checking back for an official release date.

The Size Matters show at The Nerve Gallery in Oak Park has recently wrapped up. I was very honored to have my work hanging there. I still have the paintings so if you are interested in purchasing one (or all) of them, feel free to shoot me an e-mail. They are $40 each (plus shipping if you're out of state or far from me). I'll probably throw some free copies of GSD in there for you as well. So hit me up. The next show at The Nerve Gallery is tentatively September 5th. They'll have more info up soon I believe. This show is a tiki theme complete with a tiki bar and bands playing. I will be debuting three new pieces at the show. I will post the info when I get it. I'd love to see you all out there!

A big plus of Comic-Con weekend was I got to see my good friend and Alex Ghost partner Aaron Pittman. Aaron's work has gotten so much tighter and even more astounding. He has some awesome projects and prospects coming up so you should keep an eye on him. We're also going to be getting back to work on Alex Ghost soon. The new pages are amazing. And we're also working on a super secret pitch for a new book for one of the big three. We'll talk about it more another time but it's really really cool and we're hoping it can work out.

Sorry I haven't been updating lately folks. I've been working on issue #1 as well being tied up at my day job (the glamorous life of a not-so-pro comic artist) with my new hours. I should have Issue #1 out by the end of this month or at least in time for Chicago Comic-Con in August.

The Steps To A Goofy Painting

Hello all. I've been hard at work on Issue #1. I'm nearing completion and plan to have it out at the end of this month. I've also been working on some paintings for the "Size Matters" show that will take place this Saturday at the Nerve Gallery in Oak Park (more info towards the bottom of this post). So I thought it'd be cool if I showed a step-by-step of how I do my paintings. For this post, I used a Guardian Of The Universe.

I normally start out with a non-photo blue pencil. In this picture, I'm just using what I normally use for GSD pages, 11x14 Strathmore Bristol board. You can get a pad of it from the local art store for like $12. Once I'm done doing the pencils, it's time to paint.

I'll be honest, and some of you may know from seeing me at conventions, I don't use the crazy professional watercolor kits. Nope. I use a 24-color Crayola kit that I get from Target for $3.99. It seems to do the trick. So same method as I do with GSD. The only difference is, with GSD, I ink the pencils before I paint. I'm trying something differently with this painting (and the paintings I did for the upcoming show). So I just brush over each part. I use a Dynasty #5 brush because I like the way the tip keeps a point when wet and can curve around while brushing. I'll normally apply 2 or 3 coats, depending on how dark I want the color to be. Once the paint dries (which is what rocks about the Crayola paints, they dry extremely fast which is why I use em especially at conventions cause I can bust out a painting in rapid time), I'll finish it all up.

So I said above how I'd normally ink my pencils then paint but I wanted to go with a rough sketchy style with this painting. So after the paint dried, I used a thick #9 tip sketching pencil and darkened all the lines and did the shading and whatnot. I was a little sloppy with this one because I was just using it as an example. In total, this whole painting took me about 10 minutes to do.

So that's my painting style in a nutshell. When I do GSD, it's a little more complicated because after painting, I do ink washes and whatnot. But that's for another time.

I was very pleased to see my Galactus painting went to a good home for the Josh Medors benefit. The auction was a success and I believe they said it will pay for about a year and a half's worth of treatment for Josh. Thank you to all the artists that contributed and to all the great art collectors and fans who went and bought all of the items listed. You helped a great cause.

So this weekend, I'll be taking part in a show at The Nerve Gallery in Oak Park, IL. The show is called Size Matters and will feature artwork that is all at a finished size of only 12x12. There are a bunch of great artists that will be on display such as Ed Nowiszewski, Walter Piper, Art Baltazar and more. Definitely come out and give me a high five or something. I will have three original watercolor pieces on display (and they will be for sale for those bringing $$$). Here is a flier for the show:

GSD #1 & Citizen Toxie Says Hi!

Hello hello! I have been hard at work on Great Sandwich Detective #1. It's looking awesome and also hilarious. I plan to have it out mid/late June. I am awaiting more copies of GSD #0. As soon as I get them, I will be bringing/sending them to the other stores that have agreed to carry it. As of now, the only store in the Chicagoland area that has it in stock is Tenth Planet on 95th & Cicero in Oak Lawn. This batch of copies are missing a price on them but they are $2. If Paul's not there and one of the employees says they don't know how much they are, tell em to look here!

Yo Tenth Planet Employee! What's happenin'? Your store rocks. Great Sandwich Detective #0 is going for $2. I love you. Bye.

Awkward? Maybe. Anywho. As soon as I get the new copies, it will be easier to find in the Chicago area as well as some other areas like Homewood and Belleville. I'm also in contact with a store from Ann Arbor, MI that is interested. So I will keep you all posted.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Instant Press open studio. Though I'm not an official member of the IP team, those guys are great and I wish them great success. So yeah, you rock if you went there and are now looking at my blog. Dave Gruba has asked me to draw the next issue of Son Of Gondor and I am definitely down for that. So be on the lookout for that as well.

I'm still awaiting word on that little con in Oak Lawn on July 12th. I'll hopefully be there drawing and selling copies of GSD #0 and #1. Awesome. Wizard World Chic- er- Chicago Comic-Con is coming up in a couple of months. I will be there along with Aaron Pittman ("Alex Ghost", "Reaper Heights"), Drew Rose ("Alex Ghost"), Andy Vanderbilt "GSD" cover artist, "Grim Force") and Eric Berndt ("Grim Force"). It's gonna be a rocking good time.

I'm also working on organizing a chapter of Drink And Draw for the South Side of Chicago. If you're not familiar with the Drink And Draw Social Club, click here for their website. Basically artists get together weekly/monthly/whatever at a bar and have adult drinks and draw pretty pictures. There's a group that meets on the North Side every Wednesday but I figure we have a lot of South Side artists over by us and we're surrounded by bars so why not have a chapter here? So if you're an artist and you're interested in joining us, feel free to e-mail me. Non-drinking artists AND writers (that means you, David Gruba!) are also welcome. Please only 21+ artists! We don't want it to turn into Underage Drink And Draw Then The Bar Loses Its Liquor License!

My Piece For Josh Medor's Benefit Damaged

Unfortunately, I just received an e-mail from Dave Kopecki, who is running the art auction for Josh Medors. Dave told me my piece came to him in the mail heavily damaged (thanks a lot USPS) and is afraid that it will not sell due to the condition. I told Dave to list the piece with the condition that I will do a new painting for the winner, whatever they request. I don't know if Dave is going to post that or not but be on the look out. If my piece is listed tomorrow for the auction, my offer stands that I will paint whatever the winner wants and mail it to them, this time in a cushioned lockbox with lasers and an airbag system if I have to.

I apologize to anyone who was looking forward to bidding on the Galactus painting. To be honest, I am extremely embarrassed. I should have sent it in better packaging. The employees at the post office are so rude and ignorant every time I'm in there so I was reluctant to listen to them when they were rifling off the nine million shipping options. That's my fault and I'm sorry.

I urge you to bid on whatever you can tomorrow. This is an extremely noble cause and one that is worth both your money and attention.

Instant Press Comics Open Studio This Saturday!

This Saturday, the gentlemen over at Instant Press Comics will be hosting an open studio (like an open house but for awesome comic book art). A bunch of artists, writers and creators will be hanging out, drawing, displaying artwork and eating finger sandwiches (NOTE TO INSTANT PRESS: there better be finger sandwiches there!) I had a blast yesterday at the first day of Motor City Con. It's such a great convention. The artists are great, the guests are great (except for charging $15-$20 or more for autographs) and most importantly the convention-goers are great! Oh yeah, and soft pretzels and cheese are really cheap in Michigan! So we sold some books, did some sketches, some paintings, got some work done. We had a lot of people join our league of mustachioed people. It was really really awesome to see people walking around the convention wearing our mustaches. I better see them on today! So I got a buttload of pictures to put up yesterday so check it out.

Motor City Con 2009!

Motor City Con This Upcoming Weekend!

I don't have any new art to post today and I've been really busy so I wanted to post before I head off to Motor City Con on Friday. I'll be in the Artist's Alley all weekend with my cohort Andy Vanderbilt, spreading the word about mustaches and talking food. I'll have copies of The Great Sandwich Detective #0 for sale. I'll also have some goodies to give away. Plus I'll be doing sketches all weekend and I'll also have some original artwork on sale. So if you're in the Detroit area this weekend and wanna see some awesome art from some awesome artists and also give Taimak from The Last Dragon a high five, come on out to Motor City Con!

Hurm (Via Chalk)

I know! I've been slacking! Shame on me! Exclamation points!

I have another chalk drawing to share. Stacey surprised me a couple weeks ago with one of those big boxes of Crayola chalk so I got cracking on some chalk drawings. I did another monster as well but that's on Stace's camera so I'll get that from her soon to put up here. I'm also going to try to put some actual drawings up soon too. I'm also gonna finally clean the snot out of my nose (what does that even mean?) and get working on GSD #1. I saw the style the GSD #0 will be printed in and it looks amazing.

I will have GSD #0 on sale at Motor City Con in a couple weeks. I'll also be doing sketches and giving out some other goodies. I might have some paintings for sale as well. I will be accompanied by GSD cover artist Andy Vanderbilt! (a.k.a. my lucha libre bodyguard El Tintorerra). Motor City Con takes places May 15th-17th at the Rock Financial in Novi, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit). The show has tons of great artists such as Art Baltazar (aw yeah man!), Tim Bradstreet, Mitch Breitweiser, Guy Davis and more as well as awesome media guests like Princess Leia herself, Carrie Fisher! I'm really looking forward to it as it's my first out-of-state convention! Click here for more info on the convention.
